Breeding Egg-Scattering Tropical Fish

Egg scatterers release eggs among plants, mops or substrate. Many adults provide no care and will eat eggs they can reach.

Create an egg refuge

Use mesh, marbles or dense spawning media that allows eggs to fall away from adults without trapping fish.

Use mature clean water

Eggs and larvae are sensitive to waste. The spawning tank should be cycled or supported by mature gentle filtration before use.

Remove adults promptly

Observe the event and transfer adults once spawning is complete. Do not leave them hoping they will ignore the eggs.

Match light to the species

Some eggs are sensitive to bright light. Use species-specific information rather than making every spawning tank dark.

Prepare microscopic foods

Many egg-scatterer fry are smaller than livebearer fry. First-food readiness determines whether a successful hatch becomes a successful brood.
