Why release is harmful
Non-native species can compete with wildlife, alter habitats or introduce pathogens. Even tropical fish may survive in warm outflows or seasonal conditions.
Use responsible alternatives
- Return the fish to a willing retailer if permitted.
- Contact an aquarium club or experienced keeper.
- Use a reputable rehoming service.
- Maintain the fish while finding a suitable home.
- Ask a fish veterinarian about humane options when rehoming is impossible.
Dispose of plants and water carefully
Bag unwanted plants for municipal waste where allowed. Do not dump aquarium contents into natural water, storm drains or outdoor ponds.
Check local law
Movement, sale and possession rules vary by species and jurisdiction. In Canada, federal and provincial authorities regulate releases and invasive species.
Design breeding to prevent surplus
The best solution is to stop repeated spawning before the aquarium becomes overcrowded.
