Parental Care and Mouthbrooding in Aquarium Fish

Parental care can improve fry survival and reveal complex behaviour, but it can also create aggression and feeding challenges.

Identify the care pattern

One parent may guard eggs, both may herd fry, or a mouthbrooder may carry eggs and young. Do not assume the same pattern across a genus.

Reduce competing pressure

Tank mates can trigger constant defense, leaving parents exhausted and other fish injured.

Feed without breaking the family

Place small foods where fry can reach them while ensuring parents maintain body condition.

Avoid premature stripping

Artificially removing eggs or fry may be used by experienced breeders, but it can add handling risk and remove natural care.

Know when to separate

As fry grow, parents may prepare to spawn again or become aggressive toward juveniles. Watch behaviour rather than following a fixed calendar.
