Genetics, Hybridization and Ethics in Tropical Fish Breeding

Genetics affects colour, shape, fertility and health. Responsible breeding values function and welfare above novelty.

Keep parentage records

Record source, strain, location code and relatedness. Without records, a visually attractive fish may have uncertain ancestry.

Avoid repeated close pairing

Inbreeding can increase expression of harmful recessive traits and reduce vigour. Outcrossing also requires compatible, accurately identified stock.

Select for function

Do not perpetuate extreme fins, bodies or eyes that interfere with swimming, feeding, vision, birth or normal behaviour.

Disclose hybrids

A hybrid can be healthy and attractive, but it must not be sold as a pure species, location form or established strain.

Know when to stop a line

Repeated deformity, poor fertility or chronic weakness is a reason to discontinue breeding and seek expert advice.
