“Gourami” covers several species with different adult sizes and temperaments. Many build bubble nests, but one generic setup does not fit them all.

Why keepers choose this species

Their nest-building and parental behaviour are fascinating, and some smaller species can be bred in modest dedicated systems.

Set up around the fish

Research the exact species. Use a covered, warm tank with gentle flow, floating cover and hiding space for the female.

Spawning and parental behaviour

The male may become territorial around the nest. Observe introductions and separate fish before pursuit becomes injury.

Fry and grow-out

Many gourami fry are very small and need microscopic first foods before larger live or prepared foods.

Important limit: Do not apply dwarf-gourami advice to giant, pearl, honey or three-spot gouramis without checking species-specific needs.

Before you start

  • Confirm the exact species or strain and its adult care requirements.
  • Prepare a cycled fry-safe filter and separate grow-out capacity.
  • Arrange appropriate first foods before pairing adults.
  • Record parentage, dates and any uncertain hybrid ancestry.
  • Identify realistic, responsible homes for juveniles.
