Why keepers choose this species
They show obvious sexual dimorphism, give birth to free-swimming young and adapt to many established aquariums. Their ease also encourages accidental crowding and undocumented crossing.
Set up around the fish
Use a mature, covered aquarium with gentle filtration, stable conditions and dense fine-leaved or floating cover. A separate grow-out tank is usually more humane than keeping a heavily pregnant female confined in a small box.
Spawning and parental behaviour
Females may store sperm and produce multiple broods after one mating. Separate sexes early if you need to control numbers or preserve a line. Do not assume a newly purchased female has not already mated.
Fry and grow-out
Offer appropriately sized prepared or live foods in small portions, keep the bottom clean and expand space as the group grows. Record brood dates and parentage when strain identity matters.
Before you start
- Confirm the exact species or strain and its adult care requirements.
- Prepare a cycled fry-safe filter and separate grow-out capacity.
- Arrange appropriate first foods before pairing adults.
- Record parentage, dates and any uncertain hybrid ancestry.
- Identify realistic, responsible homes for juveniles.
